Chapter 12: Six Years of Receipts
He brought the notebook at sunrise.
I was sitting up in the infirmary bed with my son at my breast and my daughter asleep in the crib.
Torin stood in the doorway for a full minute before he came in.
He laid a small leather book on the quilt beside my knee.
"Read it," he said. "Please."
I read.
Every page was a date and a weight in a neat column, and at the bottom of each one a signature.
Rhoda Grimshaw, in her small upright hand.
"Moonbane," I said. "Forty pounds, in March. Sixty pounds in June."
"It crosses the river at the bridge. My scouts have written it down for six years."
"Six years."
"Yes."
I turned the pages back to the first one.
I was nineteen the first time Rhoda had a crate of it delivered.
I looked at him.
"You've had this in a drawer since before I married him."
"It's a log of shipments. I didn't know what it was for."
"But you knew whose it was."
"I knew it was Rhoda's."
"And you never said a word to anyone."
His jaw tightened.
"I thought it was for her wolves. It's an old pack trick, a tonic that keeps the young ones docile. I thought it was ugly, and none of my business. It wasn't until the healer read your blood that I understood it had a face."
"My face."
"Yes."
"That was six days ago."
"Yes."
"You sat in that chair and watched me say I didn't know who, and you had this notebook across the yard."
"I should have shown you that night."
"Why didn't you?"
He did not look away.
