Chapter 16: The Middle of the Bridge

We reached the yellow line at first light.

I was in Torin's coat, with my hair loose and my boots unlaced.

Torin walked beside me, and he did not say a word about the night.

He didn't need to.

Every Ironwood guard on the bank looked at the two of us and found something else to stare at.

The howling had not stopped for an hour.

On the far side of the bridge, a man stood alone in the road.

It was the Black Fir Beta, a heavy man of fifty, and he was on his knees.

His shirt was torn to the shoulder.

Four long claw marks ran across his chest, and they were still bleeding.

"Luna," he said.

"I'm not your Luna."

"Morven Moncrief." He bowed his head to the asphalt. "I'm asking."

"Stand up."

"I'll stand up when you've heard me."

I looked at Torin.

He nodded once, and then he put himself a half step behind my shoulder.

"Say it," I said.

The Beta lifted his face.

"It started at moonset," he said. "Eleven of ours went at each other in the east pasture. Two are dead. A mother locked herself and four cubs in the cold room because her own mate came at the door with his teeth out."

"Where is the Alpha?"

"In the pack house, trying to bring them back."

"Is he?"

"He can't feel them." His voice cracked. "He stands at the window and shouts into the link, and they don't hear him. They hear something else."

"What?"

"You."

The word hung in the air.

"The elders say it's you they're howling for," he said. "Three hundred wolves who had a leash and lost it. They can feel you across the river and they can't reach you."

"That is not my doing."
