Chapter 4: The Gate at Dawn

I had not slept.

The voice behind my ribs had said "Finally," and then gone silent, and I lay awake all night waiting for it to speak again.

At dawn, the wolves of Ironwood came out of their houses and stood along the road.

Nobody told me why.

I heard it first through my own skin, a hum under my feet.

Then the healer came in with my cardigan and said, "Black Fir is at the gate."

I stood up.

The room tilted, and I held onto the table until it stopped.

"You don't have to go out there," she said. "Alpha Hawksworth will turn them around."

"I know," I said. "I want to."

I put one baby in each arm and walked out of the infirmary in a borrowed cardigan and a pair of paper slippers.

It was cold and bright, and frost still covered the grass.

At the gate stood Cedric, in the same dark suit he'd worn to his own birthday.

Priscilla was at his side in a long white coat, and three elders and the Black Fir Beta stood behind them.

Torin was already at the gate, with his arms folded, and he did not turn when I came up beside him.

Cedric looked at me.

I waited for him to say my name.

"Morven," he said. "Let's end this."

"Good morning, Cedric."

"The pups are Black Fir blood. They belong on Black Fir land, and you know it. Give them to the Beta."

"No."

"You were my mate, so I'll make it easy. You can come back to the house. You can have the east wing and stay with them. Priscilla will be Luna, and she's agreed to let you be their nurse."

The elders nodded.
