Chapter 8: The Invitation

The letter said:

Come to the Samhain gathering on Saturday and answer to the pack for what you've done. Bring the pups. We will settle their place in front of everyone.

Torin read it twice, standing in the infirmary kitchen.

Then he set it on the table and held it flat with one finger.

"No," he said.

"I haven't said anything yet."

"You were going to."

"I was going to say I'm going."

"Morven."

"It's an open gathering, Torin. Three hundred wolves, and every one of them will be there to see me walk in and beg." I leaned against the counter and folded my arms. "She's put the whole pack in a room to watch me. I want them to see me."

"She wants you in a room where she can take the pups."

"She won't."

"You don't know that."

"I do. I won't bring them."

He looked at me.

"The letter says to bring them."

"The letter says a lot of things." I picked it up and tore it neatly in half. "The twins stay here with the housekeeper and the healer. The only thing I'm bringing is me."

"And what do you want in there?"

"Four things."

I held up a finger.

"One. My father's tools, which she's had locked in the shed since he died."

A second.

"Two. The old foreman's ledger from the garden, with the planting records, so I can match those roots to her glasshouse."

A third.

"Three. A look at Priscilla's face when she sees I'm not afraid of her."

I held up the fourth and stopped.
