Chapter 13: One Chance
I opened the blue folder the night before the board met, because I was tired of being afraid of it.
Gran had taped the flap shut, and the tape came away in one dry strip.
Inside were two documents and an index card.
The first was the Trust deed, twelve pages, with Gran's signature in blue ink on every one.
The second was a single sheet headed "Priority Line: Terms of Investment."
It said that Victoria Riordan's number would be listed first, answered on the first ring, and that the nearest aircraft would go to her at any hour for any reason.
Under it Gran had written: "Not a favor. A condition."
The card was in her slanting hand.
"Ask for what you need, out loud, the first time. You never did learn that from me."
I read it by the woodstove until the fire went down, and then I put it in my jacket pocket.
The board met on Friday the sixth, in the glass conference room above the hangar floor.
Beck sat at the head of the table in his navy quarter-zip.
Phyllis sat on his right with her pen grip beside her water glass.
The three outside directors were two men and a woman in good coats, and I had a feeling they had never once looked down at the hangar below their window.
I took the chair at the foot, with Gran's lawyer beside me and the deed in front of me.
"We'll keep this short," Beck said. "The court has frozen the Trust's shares until Monday's hearing. Until then Ms. Riordan has no vote, and this board has no duty to hear her."
