Chapter 16: Name the Room
My father came to Cosimo's tower on Thursday morning without a coat.
The doorman called up, and Cosimo looked at me over his coffee.
"Say no, and I'll have him walked out," he said.
"Let him up."
"Lydia."
"I want to see what he looks like asking."
Franklin stepped out of the elevator into the study and stopped just inside the door.
His silver hair was flat on one side.
He had not shaved, and he held a manila folder in both hands in front of him.
Cosimo took the chair by the window and said nothing, and he did not take his eyes off my father.
"Sit," I said.
My father sat.
"I've come about the Wharf," he said. "You've been to the house. You've seen the loan."
"Benton's loan, in your name."
"Yes. And there is a sale. Meridian Harbor Group closes on Friday for forty-one million, on a power of attorney I never signed." He opened the folder and set it on my knee. "He has sold the building out from under me, Lydia. Your grandfather's building."
I turned the first page.
Meridian was a shell, and the signature at the bottom was a copy of Franklin's, with the same loop that Benton had used on mine.
"So Benton forges your name too," I said. "Welcome."
"This isn't funny."
"It isn't supposed to be."
He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.
"I'm asking you to stop," he said. "Call him off. Whatever you're planning for him, whatever you're doing with that ledger, if it goes on he sells the Wharf and we have nothing. I'll make it right. I'll give you the house. I'll give you the foundation chair back tomorrow."
