Chapter 6: Lot Fourteen
The Harbor Charity Auction filled the ballroom of the Seaport hotel with three hundred people in black tie and a string quartet.
I walked in at ten to seven in Rosemary's black dress, hemmed that afternoon with Rosemary's sewing kit.
Cosimo came in behind me and took a spot against the back wall.
He wore a plain dark suit and no tie, and he made no effort to be noticed.
Several people noticed him anyway.
I found my seat at a back table, between a retired surgeon and his wife, and I watched the stage.
Lot fourteen sat on a pedestal under a small spotlight, on a bed of black velvet.
My great-grandmother's brooch.
The diamonds caught the light and threw it across the front rows.
At table one, the table nearest the stage, sat my husband.
Benton wore the navy tuxedo I had picked out for him two Christmases ago.
Brianna was not with him.
My father sat on Benton's left, with his silver hair combed and his glasses on their cord, and he was chatting with the woman beside him.
I noticed the empty chair on Benton's right.
I stayed where I was through lots one to thirteen.
A set of silver candlesticks went for six thousand dollars, and a week at a villa in Tuscany went for twelve.
The auctioneer, a tall woman with a gavel, lifted her hand toward the pedestal.
"Lot fourteen. A platinum and diamond brooch, circa 1921, from a Boston family. Consigned by Mrs. Lydia McAlister Collier, who has asked that the proceeds go to a private fund."
"A private fund," I said, quietly, and stood up.
The retired surgeon looked at me.
"Excuse me," I said.
I walked down the aisle in the dark, past table after table, with three hundred heads turning in my wake.
