Chapter 8: Fit to Serve

The boardroom on the thirtieth floor of McAlister Holdings has a table that seats twenty and a view of the whole harbor.

I walked in at five to nine on Tuesday with a white bandage on my left hand and Rosemary on my right.

Rosemary wore her good grey suit and carried a canvas tote with knitting needles sticking out of it.

"I own four percent of this company," she told the receptionist. "I'll sit where I like."

Eleven directors sat around the table.

Most of them had known me since I wore braces.

Two of them wouldn't look at me.

Benton sat on the left side of the chairman, in a charcoal suit, with a thin folder squared in front of him.

My father sat on the chairman's right.

He didn't look up when I came in.

"Lydia," the chairman said, and cleared his throat. "Thank you for coming. This is a difficult meeting for everyone."

"I'm sure it is."

I took the chair at the foot of the table, the one my grandfather used to keep for the junior partner who brought the coffee.

Rosemary took the seat beside me, set the tote on her knee and began to knit.

Benton opened the folder.

"I'd like to start by saying how much I love my wife," he said.

Somebody coughed.

"Over the last eighteen months, I've watched Lydia struggle. She's been sleeping badly. She's been agitated, suspicious, convinced of things that aren't true. On Friday she accused me in front of the whole executive floor of crimes I did not commit. On Sunday night she disrupted a charity event in front of three hundred guests and had a valuable family heirloom pulled from sale."

"It was stolen," I said.

"I have a letter," Benton went on, gently, "from the physician who treated her mother, expressing concern about a pattern of paranoid behavior. I'd rather not read it aloud. I'd like it entered in the record."
