Peg set the pie down on the counter, crossed the kitchen in three steps and threw a dish towel over the cage.
"Not one more word out of you," she told it.
From under the towel, very muffled, the parrot said, "Hot stuff."
Santiago was still on one knee on the linoleum, holding the open box.
"Is that a no?" he asked.
"That's the bird," I said.
"And you?"
I looked at the ring.
Plain gold. Nothing anyone could mistake for anything else.
I didn't hold out my hand for him to put it on.
I took it out of the box myself and slid it onto my finger.
It fit, because he'd measured a hair tie of mine in December and never told me.
"Yes," I said.
Peg burst into tears and hugged us both so hard Santiago nearly went over sideways.
The parrot, under the towel, said the word again.
Nobody cared.
We got married on September fourteenth, a year to the day after I walked out of a basement in Medellín.
Peg's backyard had never looked like that, and never would again.
