Chapter 15: Ten Years

Daphne's house in Larchmont was a gray shingled place with a wreath on the door and a white SUV in the driveway.

We got there at half past five, with the sky going pink over the Sound.

Rory had not said a word since the bridge.

He parked behind the SUV so it couldn't leave and got out of the truck with the door left open.

"Stay behind me," he said.

"No," I said.

"Abby."

"She took your mother in the middle of the night," I said. "I'm not staying in the truck."

He looked at me for one second, and then he rang the bell and kept his finger on it.

Daphne opened the door in a cream robe with her hair in a clip.

She looked tired, and for once it wasn't acting.

"Rory," she said. "Do you know what time it is?"

"Where is she?"

"Mom is asleep upstairs. She's safe. She needed to be somewhere quiet, away from that woman and all the lies she's telling." Her eyes slid to me. "I'm only protecting her."

"Get her."

"She's resting."

"Daphne." He stepped over the threshold. "I'm a paramedic. I can call a welfare check on a woman taken from her home by a stranger at four in the morning. Do you want a police car in front of your house, with your friend's camera on it?"

Daphne's smile stopped.

"You wouldn't."

"Watch me."

Behind her on the stairs, a small figure in a nightgown and a cardigan appeared.

"I'm awake," said Rory's mother. "I've been awake since they put me in that car. Rory, I want my shoes."

Daphne turned.

"Mom, you're upset. You don't know what you're saying. Go back upstairs."

"Don't tell me what I know, Daphne Marie."

It came out sharp.
