Chapter 8: The Casserole

On Saturday afternoon, a white SUV parked across from my father's house and stayed there for ten minutes.

I watched it from the front window with a mug in my hand.

"That's her," said Bea, who was on the couch sorting my father's mail into piles.

"I know."

"There's somebody in the passenger seat with a phone up."

"I know that, too."

The driver's door opened.

Daphne got out in a pale yellow coat, with her hair tied back and no neck brace.

She held a covered glass dish in both hands.

Down the street, every neighbor on every stoop stopped what they were doing.

She crossed the road slowly, and she climbed my father's steps with her eyes down.

I opened the door before she could knock.

"Abby," she said. Her voice shook. "I know I shouldn't be here."

"Then why are you here?"

"I made lasagna. It was the only thing I could think to do."

She held it out.

The phone in the SUV was pointed straight at my face.

"You're filming," I said.

"My friend's just keeping me safe. I'm so scared of how this looks." Her eyes were glossy. "I'm not here to fight. I just wanted you to know that it was never about the spot."

Bea had stood up behind me, and I heard the bat move against the wall.

"It was never about what?" I asked.

"The trial. Domenico and I never meant for anyone to get hurt. My mother is so sick, Abby. You don't know what it's like to watch your mother disappear."
