Chapter 16: Torin's POV

Torin's POV

I told her in the order it happened, because it was the only way I could stand to say it.

The hall had a hundred and twenty seats and a long table under the high windows.

I sat on the left bench with two of my own Betas, three rows from the back.

At eleven the captain of the Royal Guard walked up the aisle and read the order into the room.

Then he took it down to the medical wing.

I watched the faces on the benches around me.

Nobody gasped.

That is the part I have trouble with.

A hundred wolves heard a woman's door being locked on her labor, and the loudest sound was somebody turning a page.

I looked at the Seer.

He sat at the King's right hand with his fingers folded, and he caught my eye and gave me a small kind nod.

I understood what the nod meant.

It meant: you can walk out, Alpha Montfort, and we will remember that Greywater did.

Greywater has three hundred wolves and a granite quarry.

The Crown has eleven thousand and the only airfield in the north.

I had a sister in the medical wing, and she had been sent for at nine.

I called her from the hallway.

She was already outside the delivery room, and the guards would not let her through.

She was crying in the furious way she does when she is losing.

"Come away," I said.
