Chapter 13: Even
The old man's grey sedan pulled out of the lot before Maura could move.
Vincent was already crossing the gravel toward Carlo's car.
She followed him, with her nails still cutting half-moons into her palm.
Nico had his face against the glass.
When Vincent opened the rear door, the boy slid out and stood very straight in the small blue coat he had worn to his own birthday.
Carlo sat in the back seat with his hat on his knee.
"He woke from his nap and heard the driver say where you had gone," Carlo said. "I couldn't stop him. You know how he is."
"Who told the driver?" Vincent asked.
"One of your own men, I'd imagine. They worry."
His thumb moved in a slow circle over his knuckle.
Maura watched it and said nothing.
"Keep him with you tonight," Carlo said. "I trust nobody else with him now. I'll send the car for him in the morning."
He closed his window, and the long black car rolled away.
Nico took hold of her coat sleeve.
"Was that the man who has Finn?" he asked.
"Yes," Maura said.
"He looks like Nonno's barber."
Cormac's flat smelled of toast and old radiators.
By eight o'clock the kitchen table was covered in paper.
Cormac had drawn the old man's street from memory of a utility map, and he was tapping a pencil on the corner of it.
"Revere runs on two feeders here," he said. "If I know a guy, and I know a guy, I can drop the whole block for ten minutes without anyone asking me why."
"Ten minutes is enough?" Vincent asked.
"For a crew of four with night goggles. Not for you in that jacket."
