Chapter 14: The Seat
Six captains sat around the long table in the Dedham dining room, and not one of them looked at Maura.
She stood against the wall by the sideboard, where the wives usually stood.
Carlo's chair at the head of the table was empty.
Vincent did not take it.
He stayed on his feet at the foot, with his pink new hands flat on the wood.
"Saturday at noon the man across the river wants Nico," he said. "In exchange for my son."
Nobody spoke.
"I won't hand him over."
The oldest captain, a heavy man with a gold ring on each hand, folded his arms.
"Nobody is asking you to," he said. "Nico is your dead brother's boy. He's the Don's own blood."
"Finn is the Don's blood too."
"Finn is," the old captain said slowly, "the nurse's child."
The room went very quiet.
Maura felt every head turn.
"He's my son," Vincent said.
"He's dead, Vincent. We buried him."
"He's alive. You'll hear how I know soon enough." Vincent took a ring of keys from his jacket and set it on the table. "I can't ask this family to burn for a choice it didn't make. So here is the counting house, the docks, and my seat. Give them to whoever my father names."
A younger captain swore under his breath.
"Without you," the old man said, "the unions walk. The Don is sixty-six."
"Then he'd better name someone fast."
"For a woman who filed papers on you in front of forty guests?"
Maura took one step off the wall.
"I filed papers against him," she said. "Not against my son."
The old captain finally looked at her.
