Chapter 27: Eyes Open
She stayed away from Dedham for four days.
On the fifth night Finn woke at two and asked for his father.
He didn't cry about it.
He sat up in Cormac's pull-out bed with Mr. Fox, and said, "Where is Daddy's hands?"
Maura looked at her brother, who was asleep in the armchair with his boots on.
"I'll find out," she said.
She drove to Dedham with her old clinic bag on the seat.
The big house was dark except for one light in the kitchen.
Carlo's study door stood open and empty.
The captains had moved him somewhere she hadn't asked about, and she found she wasn't sorry.
Vincent sat at the long kitchen table with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
Both hands lay open in front of him on a dish towel, red and wet.
He had been trying to change the dressings with his teeth.
"You didn't knock," he said.
"I used to live here."
"Yes."
She put the bag on the table and sat down across from him.
She took his left hand without asking.
The burn from the beam had gone through the old scars and opened them again.
She cleaned it in silence while he watched her face.
Her hand hovered over the worst of it, just for a second, the way it always had.
He saw.
"You can stop looking at it like that," he said.
"Like what?"
"Like I'm a thing to fix."
Her hand stopped.
"Is that what you think?"
"It's what I've always thought." He said it plainly, with no heat. "You were twenty-two. I bled all over your floor. You said you'd stay until I stopped, and I haven't stopped in ten years."
