Chapter 29: Nothing to Ask
Vincent Saraceno sat on a bolted stool in the Suffolk County jail and waited for his father.
The visiting room was painted a dull yellow.
A glass wall ran down the middle, with a phone on each side.
Carlo came in last, in orange.
He had lost weight in nine days.
His silver hair had been cut short by someone who didn't care, and the gentle face had hollowed under it.
He sat and lifted the phone.
"You came," he said.
"Yes."
"I knew you would. You were always the one who came."
"Papa, I came to answer your letter."
Carlo smiled.
It was the old smile, warm and patient, and it would have worked on anyone who had not heard the tape.
"Then say it," he said. "Say I was right."
"You were wrong."
The smile stayed where it was.
"I held your hand through your brother's death. I raised that boy when you were too busy bleeding to see him. I kept this family alive through two wars."
"You did."
"Then you know what it cost."
"I know exactly what it cost," said Vincent. "I know it to the dollar. It cost you a white box with forty pounds of sand in it, and a woman whose hand you held at the Mass while she trusted you."
Carlo's thumb began to circle over his knuckle.
Vincent watched it go around and felt, for the first time in his life, nothing.
"You traded my son because he had no Saraceno in him," he said. "He has all of it. He's the one who crawled through a fire to get to me."
"That's sentiment."
"No. It's why I'm here. I want you to understand that I'm not angry."
