Chapter 8: She Took Nothing
At nine the next morning I walked back onto the 41st floor, with a visitor's badge clipped to my coat.
Maxim walked beside me.
He had not asked me to come, and he had not asked me to stay away.
He had only said, "They're calling it for nine," and picked up the car keys.
Margot had called the emergency meeting at seven.
I had slept four hours on the pull-out sofa in his study, and I'd woken with my hand on my stomach and a clear head.
Every head at the long table turned when we came in.
There were forty of them.
The young woman from marketing was at the foot of the table again, tablet in her lap.
She looked at me, and I saw her eyes go straight to my belly and widen.
Margot sat at the center in a cream jacket, her hands folded.
"Thank you for coming on short notice," she said. "I'll be brief. I wish this weren't necessary."
Nobody invited me to sit, so I stayed standing beside Maxim.
"Last night two of our directors found Ms. Bruni in Maxim's home at midnight," Margot said. "She is pregnant. She has resigned, been accused of theft, been cleared at a dinner of our own clients, and now appears to be carrying a child by someone with authority over this company."
She turned a page.
"I don't say this to shame anyone. I say it because the board has a duty. If the chief executive has been in a secret relationship with his chief operating officer, we need to know whether any decisions were compromised."
The man on her left coughed into his fist.
