Chapter 22: The Plaque

The dedication was held on the twelfth of April, in the glass lobby of the new pavilion.

Nobody had been able to hang the banner straight.

Three hundred folding chairs stood in rows.

The front row had cards on the seats, and mine had my name in black ink: Maureen Tolbert, Donor.

I looked at it for a while before I sat.

Bev sat on my left in a violet dress I had never seen, and she kept straightening her glasses.

Lowell sat on my right.

He had put on a blue tie, and it was crooked, and I had decided not to fix it.

Behind us sat my forty employees, in rows, in their good clothes.

Behind them, against the glass, stood the nursing students in their scrubs, and the girl with the long braid waved at me.

The board chair spoke first, and she was brief.

Then it was my turn.

I walked up to a lectern with a bronze plaque beside it, covered in a gray cloth.

My knees were fine.

"Good morning," I said. "I'm not a speaker. I run a billing company, and I'm a first-year nursing student, and I have notes."

A few people laughed.

I took out the index cards, looked at them, and put them back in my pocket.

"My mother took in laundry for thirty-one years," I said. "She washed the sheets of people who never learned her name."

The room was quiet.

"Today every one of you has learned it."

I pulled the cord, and the gray cloth slid off.

The plaque was bronze, with plain letters.
