Chapter 9: The Chapel

Hannah's POV

Terrence did not want to say it in front of Lottie, so we went down to the hospital chapel.

It had eight wooden pews and a window made of colored plastic.

At four in the morning there was nobody in it but us.

He did not sit.

He stood in the aisle with a chart pressed against his chest.

"I have to tell you something," he said, "and I'm going to say it plainly, because I don't know any other way."

"Then say it."

"Lottie's blood type is O negative."

"I know. You gave her yours."

"Yours is A. Sawyer's is AB." He swallowed. "Those two can't make an O child."

I waited for him to say the rest of it.

He didn't, so I said, "That's not possible."

"It's possible. It's just not possible for the two of you."

"A mistake in the lab."

"I ran it myself. Twice."

The window made the light on his face look blue.

"Six years ago in March," he said. "At the cabin."

I stood up so fast my knee hit the pew.

"Don't."

"Hannah, I'm sorry."

"You're sorry?" My voice shook.

"My daughter is in a bed with a third of her skin gone, and you pull me into a chapel to tell me this?"

"I'm telling you because her care may depend on what we know."

"Because my brother knew, and left her on that floor."

"Don't you dare say he knew."

"He looked at that card tonight and went white. He knew."
