Chapter 15: Lunch With Mother

The captain called at seven the next morning.

Shen Yan heard it through the bathroom door, with a towel around his neck and toothpaste in his mouth.

Xiao Chen said, "Understood," twice, and then, "Thank you for sitting on him."

When Shen Yan came out the lawyer was already dressed.

"The warrant was signed last night," he said. "Chi Feng's accounts are frozen as of this morning. A car sat outside the captain's building all night, and it has gone now."

"So his message was a bluff."

"It was a push. He wants us to hurry and make a mistake."

"What do we do instead?"

"We move out of this house and into my chambers on Harbour Street after lunch. I need my files, and a door with a real lock."

Shen Yan nodded and looked at the card on the nightstand.

He had not slept much.

All night he had been thinking about a hand pressed to a tile wall, and a voice saying his short name once.

He had decided he could be brave about lunch if he kept that voice in his head.

The Harbour Club had white tablecloths, silver service and a view of the water.

Xiao Chen parked across the road and turned off the engine.

"I can see the whole dining room from here," he said. "If you stand up, I come in."

"I won't stand up."

"Then lift your left hand."

"And you'll come in?"

"I will walk through the door and pick you up if I have to."

Shen Yan laughed, which surprised both of them.

He got out of the car before he could lose his nerve.

Mrs. Shen was already at a corner table in lilac silk, with Shen Rui beside her and a fourth place laid for nobody.

"My darling." She held out both hands. "Sit by me."

He sat across from her instead.

Her smile did not flicker.

She ordered for him, the soup he used to eat as a child, and watched him as he picked up the spoon.

He ate, because the club kitchen was not hers and the bowl came from a tray of twelve.

"I've done a great deal of thinking since you left," she said.
