Chapter 42: The Result

The captain wore her uniform to chambers, and that was the first thing that frightened him.

She was an old classmate, a square, quiet woman.

She had come to his flat in jeans when he woke from the coma.

Today she sat in the client chair with a grey folder across her knees.

She did not take off her cap.

Xiao Chen sat behind his desk.

Shen Yan waited outside in the glass-walled reception.

He had a cup of tea and a clear view of the door.

The captain had looked at him once and said nothing.

"Shut it," she said. "Please."

Xiao Chen shut the door.

"I asked you to come alone because I don't know how to say this with him in the room."

She opened the folder.

"So I'll say it plainly. The pills in your blue box are the same drug that was in the strips."

The room went very quiet.

"The wolf-spirit depressant," she said. "The same compound, the same filler, the same coating."

She met his eyes.

"They aren't blockers, Chen. The doctor was right."

"For how long?"

"Your supply was swapped three years ago. A fresh box every month."

She laid a printout on the desk.

"Thirty-six boxes. All collected by one person, and signed for under a staff-benefit slip."

He did not need to read the name on the slip.

"Chi Feng."

"The firm's account. Chi & Partners staff benefit."

"He picked them up and handed them to you in the corridor, I'd guess. With a coffee."

"With a coffee," said Xiao Chen.

He remembered it.

Chi Feng had held a paper cup in one hand and a blue card box in the other, with an easy smile.

Don't forget your vitamins.

He had thought it a joke.

"Which pharmacy?"

"Harbour Pharmacy. It sold Mrs. Shen the strips too."

The captain turned a page, and her voice dropped.

"I pulled the ownership. It belongs to Gu Harbour Holdings."
