Chapter 49: Bed Rest

The family doctor came in at seven on Sunday morning with a folder under her arm and the face of a woman who had been up all night.

"Bed rest," she said.

Shen Yan lay propped on the hospital pillows in a private room on the maternity wing of Harbour General, with a monitor strapped across his belly.

The tracing ran steady now.

Last night it had not.

"For how long?"

"Until your son decides to arrive. You're thirty-one weeks, and your body has started rehearsing. That was a false labour, and I don't want a real one in June."

"Can I sit up?"

"You can sit up. You can use the bathroom. You cannot climb stairs, stand on a stall floor or walk out of that door alone."

She turned to Xiao Chen, who sat on the edge of the bed with Shen Yan's hand held in both of his.

"You, Lawyer Xiao, are thirty-two weeks. You may go home, and you won't."

"No."

"Then you take the cot, and you eat when he eats."

She snapped the folder shut, and paused at the door.

"As for nest-fever, it's perfectly safe if he lies down for it. Do it quietly. There are other patients on this corridor."

She was gone before either of them could answer.

Shen Yan stared at the shut door.

"Did she just give us a prescription?"

"She did."

"I think I love her."

"You may not. She'd bill us."

Mr. Shen arrived at nine with the old secretary and a black briefcase.

He sat in the visitor's chair with his stick between his knees and did not waste a word.

"The captain has the folder from the safe. She has had it since Saturday night."

"And the box the key opens?" Xiao Chen asked.

"Chi Feng's new lawyer delivered the key on Thursday. She has it open. There are bank statements in it."

He took off his glasses.

"I've been chairman of that company for thirty years. The annual meeting is called by me, and Article Three says the chairman fixes the place."

"Any place?"

"Any room of Shen Group's choosing. It says so in black and white, because my father wrote it."

Shen Yan had gone very still.

"Then it doesn't have to be the Tower."

"It doesn't have to be the Tower, and it doesn't have to be a room Gu has ever stood in." Mr. Shen's mouth moved in something close to a smile. "Does this hospital have a day room on the maternity wing?"
