Chapter 11: Tea With Tierney
In the back of the car, Livia called Luca.
She let it ring through, and when he answered she said only, "You asked for a chance. Listen."
Then she put the phone in the pocket of her coat with the line open.
The car stopped on Fifth Avenue, in front of a building with a green awning.
Tierney Holloway's apartment was on the ninth floor and looked over the park.
A nurse let her in and took her coat, and Livia kept her bag on her shoulder.
Tierney lay on a cream sofa with her cast on an ottoman and a tray of tea in front of her.
She wore a soft wrap and no makeup, and she looked very young.
"Livia," she said warmly. "Thank you for coming. Will you pour? I'm hopeless with one arm."
Livia sat and didn't touch the pot.
"Suit yourself," Tierney said, and poured her own.
The nurse went out.
The door clicked.
"I wanted us to be honest," Tierney said. "Without the room full of people. I'm not your enemy, Livia. I think we could be quite sensible together."
"Sensible how?"
"One million dollars. Cash, or wherever you like. You'd go anywhere you wanted, and you'd stay out of New York, and you'd stop telling people about timers." She stirred her tea. "It's more than your mother offered."
"Who's paying it?"
"Does it matter?"
"It's your money?"
Tierney smiled over the cup.
"You'd never need to work again. You could have a house in Pennsylvania, with that sweet old aunt. You'd be doing something kind for everyone."
"No."
"You haven't thought."
"I've thought. No."
