Chapter 10: Ansel's POV

Ansel's POV

On Monday morning I did not go home.

I showered in the surgeons' locker room and changed into clean scrubs.

Then I sat at my desk with the door open and the footage on a drive in my pocket.

My office window looks straight down at the roof of the east wing.

In February I stood at that window and saw a woman at the edge of it in a gray coat.

I knew the coat.

I had called the emergency number on her hospital file.

It was the only thing I could think of to do.

The man who answered had said, "I'm on my way." I have thought about that call every day since.

At a quarter past eight, he walked in.

Otto Wodehouse wore a navy suit and a sympathetic smile.

He had a leather folder under one arm.

"Dr. Kerrigan," he said. "Thank you for seeing me."

"I wasn't aware I was."

He sat anyway.

"I'll be brief. My father sits on the St. Brigid's Foundation."

"He and I are concerned about how the hospital is handling a painful family matter."

"Which matter?"

"The footage from January eighth."

I said nothing.

"Hazel isn't well," Otto said. "She'll want to watch it, and it wouldn't be good for her."

"I would like the copies returned to risk management."

"Hazel watched it yesterday."

His smile did not move, but something behind it did.

"I see."

"She's fine," I said. "She had a hard morning."

He opened the folder. Inside was a pledge card, already signed.
