Chapter 22: After the Screen

I did not help my mother up.

I stood over her in the aisle, with three hundred people watching, and let her kneel.

"Hazel," she said.

It was the whole of what she could say.

Her face had come apart.

The principal's face was gone, and what was left looked fifty years older and very frightened.

"I wrote that notice at the kitchen table the night of the funeral," she said. "I wrote it in ten minutes."

"I know."

"I thought if I had somebody to blame, it would stop."

"It didn't stop," I said.

"No."

"It just moved in with me."

She bowed her head, and her shoulders began to shake.

My father crossed the tile and stood beside her, and he did not try to lift her either.

I looked at the two of them for a long moment.

Then I said it, loud enough that the nurses along the wall could hear, because I wanted it witnessed.

"I'm not coming home, Mom."

She nodded against her hands.

"I'm not saying I forgive you today. I don't know yet if I can."

"I understand."

"You don't. But here's what happens next."

I let the words come slowly.

"You will print a correction in the Dispatch, the same size as the notice, with the same prominence, saying what you got wrong."

"Yes."

"You'll see your granddaughter on Sunday afternoons at Ansel's table for one hour, with Dad."

"Yes."

"You'll never again say a word about me in public that you haven't checked."
