Chapter 13: You Said Silent

The reporters went silent when the woman in the navy coat reached me.

She was shaking so hard that her daughter had to hold her elbow.

"Four years ago I wrote nine letters to the county," she said. "I asked who the pilot was. Nobody would tell me."

"I'm sorry," I said. "I wasn't allowed to answer them."

"You don't understand." She wiped her face with her palm. "I watched the news this morning. They said you left a man to die."

"I did leave him."

The cameras pushed closer.

"I had fuel for one lift," I said. "He told me to take the child."

"I know," the woman said. "My daughter heard him."

The girl lifted her chin.

She was thirteen, tall and thin, with her mother's gray eyes and a scar on her left eyebrow.

"I was in the back seat," she said, to me and not to the cameras. "I couldn't move my legs. I kept my eyes shut because of the blood."

"You were so brave," I said, and my voice cracked.

"I heard you tell him you'd come back," she said. "And I heard him say, I know you will."

Someone behind the lenses lowered a microphone.

"He gave us a ride that night," the mother said. "My car had broken down on the switchback. I walked uphill to find a signal, and he drove my daughter slowly behind me with his hazards on. Then the road went out from under him."

She turned and faced the whole crowd of reporters.

"That man died for my child, and this woman is the reason I still have her. Anyone who prints that she abandoned him can come say it to my face."
