Chapter 22: Biscuit Takes the Stage
The anniversary event was in the same atrium, under the same glass roof, with the same podium and the same four hundred cameras.
I stood at the back beside Ruby in my white blazer.
My mother sat in the second row in her church coat, holding a leash.
At the end of it, in a small black bow tie, Biscuit sat very straight.
"He's shaking," Ruby whispered.
"He's thrilled."
"He's shaking with thrilled."
The senior director with the gold pin took the stage and welcomed the shareholders, and then she did something I hadn't been told about.
"We have an unscheduled speaker," she said. "He is no longer an officer of this company. He has asked for two minutes, and the board has agreed."
Dalton walked out of the wings in the charcoal suit.
The room went still, and then the cameras began to click all at once.
He stopped at the podium and did not touch the microphone.
He had no cards.
"A few months ago I stood here," he said, "and a reporter asked me about my wife."
His voice carried to the glass roof.
"I told him there was no Mrs. Aldridge. That was a lie. She was standing forty feet from me with a stack of divorce papers, and I had put her there."
A murmur went through the crowd.
"Her name is Monica Aldridge," Dalton said. "She holds eleven patents that made this company a billion dollars, and she built them in a lab three thousand miles from her family while I told people she did not exist."
