Chapter 15: The Warrant

I got dressed faster than I had ever dressed in my life.

Jonah put his shirt on inside out, and I told him, and he turned it around without a word.

We went down the stairs one behind the other, and by the time we reached the porch, the neighbors had already started to come up the drive.

The man with the pie was in pajama pants and a barn coat.

The stand woman was in her slippers.

The young father's truck rolled in behind them, and then another, and I saw phones come up one after the other along the fence.

The deputy waited at the bottom of the steps.

He was in his fifties, heavy through the middle, with a gray mustache and a rain jacket that was still dripping.

I had known him since I was a girl, because he had bought a pie from our stand every Saturday for twenty years.

He took his hat off when he saw me.

"Hannah. I'm sorry for the hour."

"What is this?"

"Jonah Tierney?" The deputy looked past me. "I have a warrant for your phone and for you. Theft of property over twenty thousand dollars, from Redwing Air Rescue."

"The tape," Jonah said.

"The recording, yes."

The gray-haired lawyer had gotten out of the SUV at the gate, and he stood there in a dry suit with a briefcase, watching.

"The lawyer wanted it served first thing this morning," the deputy said, more quietly.

"He wanted the press to know. I told him I'd serve it when I served it."
