Chapter 21: The Fifteenth Chair
By noon Ward owned thirty percent of his own company again, and it had cost him less than he expected.
His lawyer had called from the car park of the Pallas offices.
Calvin had not signed anything.
He had told Pallas he would, and told Ward he already had.
He had counted on the second lie to do what the first could not.
The family agreement let Ward buy any relative's shares at the offered price before a stranger could.
Ward had exercised it with one phone call and a signature on his knee in the front seat of his car.
Calvin had resigned from the board by email at one.
It was four sentences long, and none of them was an apology.
Ward read it twice in the car outside Cannon Street and put his phone face down on the seat.
He sat there for a minute with his hands on the wheel.
For six years he had run the company with his uncle at his shoulder.
Calvin had said what a quiet boy he was, and what a pity it was he took after his mother.
It was strange how little he felt.
He looked up at the yellow kitchen window and thought: I would trade the whole thirty percent for a cup of coffee in there.
