Chapter 11: You Never Read It

Genevieve's POV

I didn't sleep.

At six in the morning I opened the door of the suite to ask the hallway for coffee, and found Alasdair in the armchair beside the elevator.

He was still in his shirt and trousers, with his tie in his hand.

He stood up quickly.

"I wasn't going to knock," he said. "I just didn't want to be on another floor."

I looked at him for a long moment, and I was still angry.

I was angry and I was glad to see him, and I couldn't make the two feelings cancel.

"There's coffee at the end of the hall," I said. "Bring two."

He went.

The elevator opened before he came back.

Colin stepped out in last night's tuxedo, with his tie gone and his shirt collar open.

His eyes were bloodshot and ringed in red.

"Gen."

"Colin."

"I've been in the lobby since two. They wouldn't give me your room number." He swallowed. "I need to talk to you. Please."

I should have shut the door.

But I wanted him to hear it from my mouth, with no audience and nobody holding his arm.

"Five minutes," I said, and stepped out into the hall.

"I didn't read it," he said at once. "The thing I signed. I want you to know I never knew what it was."

"I know. I said so."

"Mother says it isn't valid. She says you tricked me. She's got a lawyer, and he says if I didn't understand what I signed, a judge can undo it."

"She said that."

"She said fraud." He wiped his mouth with the back of his wrist. "Gen, I don't want to fight you. I don't want it undone because of a lawyer. I want it undone because you come home."
