He Signed My Resignation Without Reading It, Now His Wolf Hunts Me novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: Read It Aloud

Alasdair stopped three steps from me, and his chest was heaving.

He looked at Dorian's hand, which hung at Dorian's side now, and then at my face.

"Someone get me the signing folder," he said, without turning around.

Nobody moved.

"Now."

The receptionist ran.

Imogen came out of the stairwell so fast that she must have been listening on the landing.

She was carrying a blue folder against her chest.

"I have it, love." She was breathless and bright, and her gold locket swung. "I was just about to bring it down. There's been a silly mix-up."

She set the folder in his hands and put her palm on his sleeve.

Alasdair pulled the sleeve away.

He opened the folder at the third page and stood reading, and the whole lobby waited.

I watched his eyes go down the page.

They stopped, and went back up, and went down again.

"Read it out loud," Dorian said mildly.

"Stay out of this," Alasdair said.

"I'd rather you read it," I said.

Alasdair's head came up.

For a moment his eyes were the grey I knew, and the grey was frightened.

He cleared his throat.

"I, Odette Swinburne, resign as Gamma of the Ironwood Pack, effective immediately." His voice was rough. "I thank the Alpha for nine years. I ask that my keys be accepted and my record closed."

He stopped.

"Signed. Odette Swinburne. Countersigned." He swallowed. "Alasdair Colquhoun."
