Chapter 6: The Tin

Padraig drove me home and didn't say another word.

At the gravel lane he reached across and put something in my bag.

"Don't ask," he said. "Just keep it."

I found out what it was at my grandmother's kitchen table.

It was the small tin from my old desk shelf, with a label in Imogen's handwriting.

I set it between the salt and the teapot.

Mabel stood at the stove with her back to me.

"Gran," I said. "A man in our lobby today said I smell like Ashgrove."

The spoon in her hand stopped.

"He said he knew my mother."

"Who said it?"

"Dorian Ashe, from Redbank."

She turned the burner off and stood for a moment with both hands on the counter.

Then she sat down across from me, slowly, with her cane against her knee.

"I told your mother I'd never have to tell you this," she said.

"Tell me what?"

"What you are."

Her voice was steady.

Her hands were not.

"Your mother was Ashgrove," Mabel said. "The Ashgrove line was the oldest Alpha blood in these mountains. Their wolves were white, and their Alphas were born, never chosen. Other packs hated them for it."

"What happened to them?"

"They were hunted. Four packs went to war over twelve years, and your mother's family lost every child but her."

"My mother was Alpha-born?"
