Chapter 7: What Imogen Takes

Alasdair's POV

It was already dark when I stepped out of the shower on Tuesday night.

I dragged a towel over my hair and stood in the steam, trying to remember what I had eaten that day.

I hadn't.

I had spent the day looking at an empty chair.

The Gamma's chair outside my office was empty, and Imogen kept saying she'd fill it, and every time she said it my teeth clenched.

My phone chimed on the lampstand, and I reached for it.

A smaller hand slid in and covered the screen first.

Imogen stood beside the bed in her silk robe, with her hair down.

"Let me take care of your messages," she said.

She leaned in and kissed me, soft and slow.

I felt nothing at all.

That was the strange part.

Two weeks ago her mouth had meant something to me, or I'd told myself it had.

Now I stood there thinking about a grey blazer and a pair of hazel eyes that had been silver on Saturday.

"I'll read it," I said.

"You're exhausted." She tucked the phone into the pocket of her robe. "You haven't slept since Friday. Let me sort it, and I'll tell you if it matters."

"Give it back, Imogen."

"Sweetheart." She smiled. "It's only emails. Let me do this for you. It's the one thing I can do."
