Chapter 17: Patricia Votes
Patricia called the board to order at nine the next morning, in the Langley Skin boardroom, with her handbag on the table.
She had sent a car for me.
Nathaniel came with me, his knuckles taped, and nobody asked him to leave.
Trevor was already in his old chair at the head of the table.
He wore a navy suit and the sad, brave face he used for reporters.
His lawyer sat at his elbow with a laptop.
"Thank you for coming," Trevor said, as if it were his meeting. "I'm afraid this will be painful."
"Sit down, Claire," Patricia said.
I sat.
Trevor folded his hands.
"I want to be honest with everyone," he said. "My ex-wife has been unwell for a long time. She forged the clinic letter to turn my mother against me. She paid for a false paternity result. Last night she hired a man to break into her own apartment, so she could blame me."
The room was silent.
"I wish it weren't true," he said, and his voice shook. "I loved her."
Two of the directors looked at me.
One of them looked at the table.
"Mother," Trevor said gently. "I know it's a shock. But you've been manipulated."
Patricia stood up.
She was sixty-four and small, and she took her time.
"I have been manipulated," she said. "That much is true."
Trevor smiled, relieved.
"After the launch, I did something I should have done thirty years ago," she said. "I stopped believing what I was told."
She opened her bag and took out two folders.
"The first is a second paternity test, from a different laboratory. I paid for it myself and I walked the sample in. Zero percent."
She laid it on the table.
"The second is a signed statement from the urologist's office on East Seventy-Fourth Street."
