Chapter 30: What I Signed
Nathaniel's POV
The message reached my phone at ten past ten on my wedding night, while Claire slept.
It was from my father's secretary, and it was short.
Section Fourteen applies at sundown. The Chairman will receive you Sunday at seven, fifty-second floor. If you do not come, the Park Avenue lab stays locked and its staff are dismissed for cause.
I read it standing at the window with my back to the bed.
I had given my wife my word that evening.
I did not wake her to tell her, and that was the first thing I did wrong.
On Sunday at seven I walked into my father's study, which I had not entered in two years.
It was the same room.
Dark wood, one green lamp, a very wide desk, and the chair where he had once told me, at nine years old, that people were either owned or owning.
My father sat behind the desk with his gloves off.
His tall lawyer stood at his shoulder with a folder.
"Sit down, Nathaniel."
"I'll stand."
"You will sit, because it will take a while, and I do not like looking up at you."
I sat.
"Your wife arrives at eight," my father said. "I will be at dinner with her. In the meantime this gentleman will take you through a short document."
He did not give the lawyer's name.
He never had.
He opened the folder and read the terms off the first page in a flat voice.
"Your voting shares go into the family trust, under my vote, for three years. You do not work in this industry in any form, in any country. You stay away from every Rhodes lab and every Rhodes executive."
