Chapter 37: Whose Blood

The black car was still rolling down the dirt road when Nathaniel went through the garden gate and did not come back.

He stood among the rose bushes with his hands hanging and his back to the house.

The older detective came out of the kitchen and thumbed her recorder off.

"I have every word he said on your porch," she said.

"Is it enough?" I asked.

"No."

Patricia's teacup rattled on its saucer.

"He called it a business practice, and a judge will call it the same," the detective said. "A letter of intent is not a crime. It shows he wanted to buy something on the day its owner died. Plenty of people do."

"Then what do you need?"

"His voice saying it, or the lawyer saying it under oath. Without one of those, Trevor is a convict with a story and you are a widow-in-waiting with a book."

"Don't call me that."

"I'm calling it what his lawyers will." She looked toward the garden. "Go and get your husband."

I found him standing at the bush Harold had touched.

"I was in the room," Nathaniel said, without turning. "Last time. I knelt on your floor and held your wrist, and there was nothing in it."

"I know."

"I never told you what I thought while I knelt there. I thought, whoever did this has no face. I can hate a man with no face."

"Nathaniel."

"He has a face. I shave it every morning." His voice broke on the word. "I sign my name the way he taught me. I have his eyes, and you looked into them this morning on a pillow."

"That's not the same as his hands."

"It's his blood that did it, Claire. Every time you look at me, you'll see the Tuesday and you'll see him."
