Chapter 44: Comeuppance

The boardroom doors opened before anyone else spoke.

The older detective walked in first, in her wrinkled suit, with a tablet under one arm.

Behind her came four French officers in dark uniforms and a woman in a gray coat with a badge on a chain.

Thirty relatives turned in their chairs.

"Monsieur Harold Rhodes," the woman with the badge said. "I am a commander of the judicial police. You will please stay where you are."

Harold did not sit down.

"On what grounds?"

"Attempted murder in New York. Conspiracy to murder in the United States, with a second count for a death in Zurich that was recorded as an accident nine years ago."

At the table, his sister put her hand to her chest.

"I have read no warrant," Harold said.

"You will read it in the car."

"You have a recording of an old man's opinion on a house."

"We have more than that," the detective said, and she set her tablet upright on the table, where the whole room could see it.

"Last night at ten," the commander said, "a man in a gray overcoat was arrested at Charles de Gaulle airport. He had a ticket to Zurich and a telephone he had not wiped."

Nathaniel's hand closed on mine.

"He has said very little," the commander went on. "His telephone has said a great deal. At twelve minutes past six on Monday morning, one minute after the shooting in Brooklyn, it called a number registered to the Chairman's own household."

"A servant," Harold said.

"The call lasted nine seconds. The only word spoken was 'Done.'"

"A servant," he said again, but a muscle moved in his jaw.
