Chapter 14: The Locker Room

The locker room smelled like tape and wet gear, and twenty-two men went quiet when I walked in.

Nate pulled a bench out for me and sat on one side.

Brody stood in the middle of the room with his back to the whiteboard.

He did not have a speech written down.

"Everybody sit," he said.

They sat.

"You've heard a story about Maggie and me. That we started in August, that she cheated on Cody with me." He looked around the room. "It's wrong. I first saw her the night of the party, and I spoke to her the next morning. I didn't know her name until it was on a cake."

The winger from practice folded his arms.

"Then why'd you tell us you'd never date a girl from campus?"

"Because I was already dating one. In secret."

Nobody breathed.

"Kayla Prentiss," Brody said. "Maggie's roommate. Since the end of July."

The room made a low noise, half groan and half laugh.

"Wait," someone said. "The blonde one? She sat in the family section at the Duluth game."

"That's her."

"She said she was somebody's cousin."

"She was lying."

I watched his face while he said it.

He didn't make it small.

He told them about the tablet and the messages with Cody three weeks before the party.

He told them he had stood at the bottom of the stairs and watched me carry a cake up to that door, and that he let it happen because he wanted to catch Kayla in the act.

"I wasn't looking out for Maggie," he said. "I want you to hear that part. I was looking out for me."

The winger stood up.

"So you let a girl walk in on that. To get proof."

"Yes."

"And now you're on the ice with her at open skate, holding her hand, and everybody calls you the good guy."
