Chapter 26: Blue Out
By Wednesday the whole campus was wearing blue.
Kayla's post had gone up on Northfield Confessions at breakfast, with a photo of a pair of white baby socks on a windowsill.
Big news, she'd written. We're having a baby. Come to the Winter Classic in blue and cheer for the little one. Student section, blue out.
Eleven hundred people had liked it by lunch.
I worked my shift at the library desk and counted blue sweaters.
Fourteen by noon.
At two o'clock three of Kayla's sorority sisters came through the turnstile in matching blue T-shirts and stopped in front of me.
The tallest one set a clipboard on the desk.
"We're collecting signatures," she said. "For a card for Kayla."
"A card."
"She's going through so much. And honestly, Maggie, you could sign it too. It would mean a lot."
I looked at the clipboard.
Forty names, in different pens.
The fourth one down was the girl in the sweater from the Homecoming party.
She had signed it so small I almost missed it.
"I'll pass," I said.
"After everything she's done for you?"
"She took my name and gave it to the whole school, and I'm still waiting for a thank-you note."
The girl with the clipboard went pink.
"She's pregnant."
"I hope that's true," I said, and watched her face change. "I hope it very much. Then there'll be a paper, and everyone can see it, and I'll sign anything you like."
They looked at each other.
The shortest one, who hadn't spoken, tugged the clipboard back.
"We should go," she said.
The girl in the sweater wasn't with them.
She was standing by the periodicals, holding a book she wasn't reading.
When they left, she came to the desk and slid a book across to me.
"Overdue," she said, and left without waiting for change.
