Chapter 9: Hush Money

Solveig's POV

I went to the east wing at dawn, alone, because he had asked and because I wanted to see his face.

He was waiting in a small walled garden with a stone bench and a dead rose.

My father stood when I came through the gate, and he leaned on the silver cane to do it.

This time he looked at my face.

He looked for a long time, and his mouth worked.

"Elowen," he said.

"Alpha."

"You have your mother's eyes. I saw it yesterday and I couldn't breathe." He wet his lips. "I have mourned you every day for fifteen years."

"Have you."

"I have, and I swear it on her grave."

I waited.

He fumbled in his coat and held out a closed fist, and then he opened it.

On his palm lay a thin silver ring with a chip of moonstone.

I had not seen it since I was eight years old.

"Your mother's," he said. "I kept it for the daughter I lost."

My throat closed.

I did not take it.

"Elowen, listen. I know why you are here. I know what the boy did, and I know what you want to do about it."

"What do I want to do?"

"Ruin us." He said it softly, almost kindly. "Ruin Rosamund. Ruin a pack that has stood for four hundred years. Is that what your mother would want?"

"You tell me what she'd want. You knew her."

He flinched.

"I will give you the northern estate," he said quickly. "The house, the farms, the river rights. A seat on the pack council, and the ring. All of it, in writing, today."
