The second Saturday in May came in clear and gold, with a small wind off the river.
The roof garden was full of people who had been told to wear anything they liked.

There were sixty chairs on the teak.
In the front row sat Zhou Qingyao, in a green silk jacket the exact colour of her hair.
She held a handful of tissues.
Behind her sat eleven weavers from Suzhou, in their good coats.
They had not stopped looking at the Bund since they had stepped out of the lift.
The silver-haired man from Milan sat near the aisle with his hands folded.
The old coat designer from the design board sat beside him.
Next to them sat the girl from the noodle shop opposite the printing shop, in her apron, because she had refused to take it off.
Two photographers stood at the back, by invitation.
Weicheng had said, in the lift, that they could take whatever they liked.
Yichen stood at the head of the aisle, in a black suit he had cut himself.
A white flower was pinned inside his collar, and the silver thimble shone on his finger.
His hands were quite steady.
He had spent the morning pacing the studio, and Zhou had told him to stop, and he'd told her to mind her own pins.
