Chapter 12: The Class

The rain beat on Gianna's umbrella, and she didn't take her eyes off Luca.

"What's she talking about?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Ask him," Gianna said. "Go on. He's very good at English now."

"Gianna," Luca said. "Stop."

"Two Easters ago, in his mother's kitchen, Dante took a call in the pantry." She said it to me, and she said it carefully. "It was me on the phone. We talked in Italian, because we always did, and your boyfriend's brother was standing at the stove six feet away with a spoon."

I looked at Luca.

He had his hand on the wet brick of the wall, and he was looking at the ground.

"He's fluent," Gianna said. "He thinks in it. He understood every word of what Dante said about you that day, and he didn't say anything. Not at Easter, not at your engagement dinner. Not in two years."

Bridget's engine idled behind me.

I heard the rain on the car roof and the pop of the hazards.

"Everyone's quiet," Gianna said. "That's fine. I'll say the rest."

"Don't," I said.

"I'm going to. Because you stood up in front of a hundred and forty people and called me a liar in a language you can't speak, Willa. I want you to hear something in plain English." She took a breath. "You were never slow. You were never stupid. We never thought you were."
