He Staged My Funeral, Now His Wolf Howls at My Door novel · Chapter 27 of 32

Chapter 27: The Wrists

Bram Crane walked down the steps of the northern box with his hands clasped behind him.

Nobody stopped him.

He stood in the aisle ten feet from me, close enough that I could see the silver pin was shaped like a small wolf's head.

"Dr. Brennan," he said. "What a remarkable resurrection."

"Alpha Crane."

"You will forgive an old man for wondering what a woman does with three years of public love and a quiet death. Revenge is such an obvious answer."

A few elders murmured, and one or two nodded.

He was good.

He was making me the villain in four sentences, and he had not raised his voice once.

"I didn't come to talk about revenge," I said. "I came as a doctor."

"For what?"

"For a medical examination."

I turned and looked up at the dais.

"Lydia Crane spent six years in an enemy pack's cells. She was brought home sick and frightened, and nobody checked her."

"I'd like to do what her own pack should have done."

Lydia's hands went behind her back.

"How dare you," she said softly. "I have suffered enough."

"Then it will be over quickly."

"It is a cruelty to examine a survivor in public!" Bram said. "My guest has been through enough."

"Your guest," I said.

I did not look away from him.

"Is she your guest, Alpha Crane? Or something else?"

The thin elder tapped her cane once on the stone.

"A Luna is crowned in front of the territory," she said. "Her body belongs to the pack's trust before her crown. Six years in cells leaves marks. Let the doctor look."
