Chapter 10: I Did

The men carrying the nets did not kneel.

They wore black visors that covered the top half of their faces, tinted so dark I could not see a single eye.

They had been fitted for this.

"Take her," Emmett Crane said. "Gently. She is a danger to herself."

The first net came up off the floor in a rush of chain and light.

I had a half second to think, and the half second was Briar's.

*Let me out.*

I let her.

The ivory silk split down the back as my spine bent.

Pale fur broke out along my arms and my jaw lengthened.

The whole hall tilted away from me as I dropped onto four feet.

I landed in a crouch and my claws bit deep into the floorboards.

The silver net hit me across the shoulders.

It burned.

Every inch of it burned, a long line of bright white pain that tore a howl out of my throat.

*Hold it,* Briar said, and there was no fear in her at all. *They made it for a sick wolf. We are not sick.*

I turned my head, caught the mesh in my teeth and ripped.

It parted.

Silver cut my gums, and I did not care.

The men with the visors fell back.

One dropped his coil and ran.

Someone in the crowd was screaming, and I heard Fiona's voice go high and thin over the noise.

"Papa! Papa, stop it, stop it!"

Emmett did not stop.

He pointed at me, and his voice cut through everything.

"This is what he made of her."

He swung his arm and pointed at Bram, and every head in the room followed.

"Ask the Alpha of Ashmoor who gave the first dose," Emmett said.

"Ask him who signed the order."

His voice rang.

"Ten years ago, the night her grandmother died, Bram Hollister put his name to a paper that said she was too dangerous to wake."
