Chapter 24: The Larkin Seat

The new cabin had a window on every wall.

The old Alpha of the north had said it was a waste of glass.

Maeve had said it was the first sensible thing she had heard from me in a month.

It stood on the same foundation, on the same bare spot of the clearing, with a porch my grandmother would have liked and a door that opened from either side.

There was no lock on it at all.

I woke on the first morning of spring in the big bed under the east window, and the sun was already on my face.

Bram was asleep on his stomach beside me, with one arm flung across my waist.

The mark on his neck was a plain pale crescent in the early light.

I put two fingers on mine, and it was warm.

It was just warm.

It had not burned in weeks, and it had not gone cold since the day on the hill.

I eased out from under his arm and went barefoot across the boards to the stove.

I filled the kettle myself, and I put in a spoon of black tea from a tin Maeve had left on the shelf.

I stood and waited while it boiled.

I did not count the seconds.

When it was done I poured it into one of the three cups on the new shelf and held it in both hands.

My hands were steady.

I had not noticed it happening, over the weeks.

I only noticed now, that the surface of the tea did not tremble.

I drank, and it tasted of tea.

"You're up early," said Bram, from the bed.
