Chapter 7: The Green Cloak

Bram walked me back through the flashlights with his coat around my shoulders and his hand on my elbow.

"She was restless," he told the first enforcer who reached us. "I took her out myself. It was my order."

The man's eyes stayed on the ground.

So did the next man's, and the next.

Not one of them looked at my face.

I put it down to the coat and the bare legs and the leaves in my hair, and I kept walking.

Bram put me back in the room, turned the key, and I heard him sit down in the hall again.

Neither of us said a word through the door.

At dawn Fiona came in with a dress over her arm.

It was ivory silk, with long sleeves to cover my wrists.

"I picked it myself," she said. "I wanted you to look lovely."

She helped me into it, and her hands were gentle and quick, and her sleeve smelled of vanilla.

She had put on the silver leaf pin.

I held very still while she fastened the buttons up my back.

"You smell different today," Fiona said lightly.

"I haven't had a shower in two days."

"No. It's something else." Her fingers paused between my shoulder blades. "It's almost like fresh air."

I said nothing.

The buttons went on, one at a time.

When she reached the last one at my neck, she leaned close to my ear.

"I've carried your cup every morning for ten years," she murmured. "I put it on the supply table at the end of the road, with a note, so you'd know somebody was thinking of you."

My stomach went cold.

"I know your face better than he does," said Fiona, and smiled at me in the mirror.

I smiled back.

I did not trust myself with a word.
