Emilio's POV
Nobody ate the tamales.
My mother sat at the head of the table with both hands flat on the plastic cloth.
Catalina sat down across from me, still in her coat, and told it in order, the way my mother had taught us to confess.
She had met Conway last summer, when he came to his father's office to collect a jacket.
He brought her coffee for a month before he said anything else.
Then he told her he was married, and that his wife was sick.
"He said it was something the family handled quietly," Catalina said. "He said his mother took care of it."
My mother crossed herself, small and fast.
"He said you lived in the back of the house," Catalina said to Greta.
"He said you hadn't come to dinner in a year. He said you were a ghost."
Greta sat very straight.
Her hands were in her lap, and I could not see them.
"He texted me every morning at breakfast," Catalina said. "I would have sworn he was sitting beside you when he did."
"He was," Greta said.
Her voice was quiet and perfectly level.
"I saw a T on his phone the morning I filed," she said. "I thought it was a lobbyist."
"I'm so sorry," Catalina said, and her face broke. "I'm so sorry. I swear to God I didn't know."
"I know you didn't," Greta said.
She stood, and her chair made no sound.
"Mama, thank you for the supper," she said. "It was the best I've had in years. I'm sorry I ruined it."
"Sit down, hija," my mother said.
