Chapter 21: Keys
I pulled on jeans and went down the stairs two at a time, with Hazel behind me in my sweatshirt.
The night air on Water Street was cold and wet.
The truck door opened before I reached it, and Connor stepped out.
He was in the same navy suit, wrinkled now, with his tie in his pocket and no coat.
He looked ten years older.
"Don't call anyone," he said. "I came to talk."
"You're not supposed to be within five hundred feet of me," I said. "The officer told you at the bail hearing."
"Then call him. I'll wait."
I already had my phone out.
I dialed the number on the victim line and gave the address.
Then I lowered the phone, because Connor had gone down on his knees on the sidewalk.
It was a grown man in a wrecked suit kneeling on a wet curb at one in the morning, with his hands open.
Lights came on in the windows above us.
A neighbor opened her balcony door, and then another did.
Phones came out.
"Hazel," Connor said. "Look at me."
She came around me and stood on the curb with her arms folded inside the sweatshirt sleeves.
"I'm looking."
"I made mistakes."
"Yes."
"I was under pressure. The firm was worse than I told you. Your father left it with debts, and I couldn't let you see it." His voice cracked on the lie, and he plowed on. "I did all of it for us."
"Which part?" Hazel asked. "The suite at the Pfister, or the ring?"
"Natalie meant nothing."
"I know she didn't."
"I'll end the divorce," he said. "I'll tear up the papers. We'll go to Lake Geneva for the weekend, like we used to, and I'll be better."
Above us, someone on a balcony said, "Oh my God," quite quietly.
I looked at Hazel's face.
