Chapter 19: The Willingness He Misread

The sealed order was already nailed to the ward door, and Cassiel's name was struck through in red ink.

Adrian found Noah in the open doorway with his eyes still on the corridor.

'What are you planning?' Adrian said.

Noah turned. He did not bother to look caught.

Noah heard the bars close around it.

He reached into his sleeve and took out the two halves of Orwin's letter.

He laid them flat on the table, joined, the torn edges meeting.

Adrian stopped moving.

'I have been learning this place since the first night,' Noah said.

Adrian looked at the letter, then at him.

'Have you.'

'The guard rotation on the third stair. Two men, changed at the bell after the kitchen carts.'
