Chapter 4: What He Called Protection
I went out on the porch in Cade's canvas coat with my daughter against my chest.
Hanna said I was out of my mind. Cade said nothing and held the door.
Bram stood in the yard with the truck lights behind him, bareheaded in the cold.
Five ranch hands had come out of the bunkhouse and stood along the fence.
Nobody had told them to.
"You can look from there," I said.
He stayed where he was.
His eyes went to the bundle in my arms, and then to the silver lock at her temple, and his face did something I hadn't seen in seven years.
"She has Grandmother's mark," he said.
"She has her own."
"Willa." He swallowed. "She's early. Is she all right? Is she breathing right?"
"She's perfect. Hanna says so."
His shoulders came down.
For one second I wanted to tell him her weight and her length and how she had screamed.
I was exactly that stupid, and I knew it.
"I came to explain," he said. "Greta's baby isn't what it looked like on the platform."
"It looked like a family of three."
"It was protection."
"For who?"
"For the pack. For you." He held out his hands. "Greta has records, Willa. Of the accident. If they got out, Ironwood would go down. I needed her close and quiet, and I needed a reason that wouldn't be questioned."
"The accident."
"The one I told you about."
"The one you told me about in a cabin, with her shirt on the floor."
His face went red, and the ranch hands behind him shifted.
